Does anybody thing that Y-107 will have a translator in NYC?
The problem is that the dial is so crowded. The only
possible place that I can think of would be at 95.1 FM. The
closest station at that frequency is in Danbury, CT

Buzz 105.1 sounds pretty good. In one of their promos, they
say they are a cure for radio burnout. You have to agree
with that. You get tired of listening to the golden oldies
after a while. But, I will not be like Vic. I do listen to
WCBS-FM quite a bit. You can't beat their personalities.

It looks like this is my private board. :) Dan Taylor
formerly of WMXV and WNBC was filling in form Bobby Jay last
night on WCBS-FM.

Licensed to New York, New York @ 105.1... the former WMXV.
Studios and transmitter are in Manhattan unless they moved
them very recently.

Anita Bonita says on rec.radio.broadcast that hers is the
voice of the voice overs on WDBZ. She says that a lot more
is to come in the next few weeks on the Buzz, can't wait.
Like I have said before, the station is quite boring. But,
like all new formats I try to listen and give them a try.

Anybody heard any news on NEW? Would love to have 80's
format launched here with a top-40 presentation. Dream on, I
know.....

ED - The Buzz is at 105.1 FM. It is a New York City
station.

There is a rumor, I repeat rumor that Dave Herman and Pete
Fornatale are returning to WNEW.

That would be great. I would love to hear Pete again,
preferably on a show like Mixed Bag on Sunday mornings. It
would be the perfect compliment to Vin's Sunday night show.

On tonight's show Vin talked at length about a possible
format change. He basically said that the on air staff is
generally the last to know about a change. He did say that
he thought any change that WNEW makes would be a return to
more of a classic rock format and not something totally
different like country.

I personally would like to see a diverse mix of new artists
along with more obscure older rock songs. No one wants to
hear another classic rock station playing the same 200 so
called classic rock cuts to death.

So what's up with the supposedly upcoming Country
Trimulcast???

Will they cover all five boroughs with a listenable signal?

Yeah, heard that rumor too. Well, I personally don't think
that is the way NEW should go. I think they need to clean
house change calls and start a new. Most people I know wont
listen to NEW no matter what. The station has been so
inconsistant in the past couple of years. I think they know
they have to do something drastic, what are they like 1.4 in
Decembers arbitrends?

I will not be posting here anymore. I gave it a shot but
there is so little interest in Radio here on Prodigy that I
am switching over to America on-line. Very active Radio
boards there and unlimited access for only 19.95. Jon

Ed - A few weeks ago Pete Fornatale was a guest on WFUV, the
NPR station of Fordham University. He really sounded good.
He started his radio career in the 1960s at WFUV. He would
be an asset to any station that would hire him.

To Answer Ed about the 107.1 Trimulcast. Not all of the NYC
metro area can pick on a 107.1. I live in Northern Queens
and can pull in the Westchester signal well on my car radio.
In my apartment the reception is fuzzy at best.

Try getting through the busy signals to get on AOL. They're
really earning their nickname "America On Hold" now.

Where on AOL is all the chat about radio? All I have been
able to tap into is the MMC keyword.

It is somewhat tricky to get into the radio area on AOL.
The keyword is MMC. then click on music professionals, and
then click on radio boards. there are 50 folders for your
perusal. I think you have to avoid AOL in the evenings when
there is the most traffic. Since they now have no time
limits, the traffic is really heavy.

There will be some changes at WNEW. Paul colford of Newsday
reports that on January 2 Dave Herman and Pete Fornatale
will be rejoining the station. The format whill be shifting
to classic rock. With their poor ratings, they have nothing
to lose. Even their current music mix is better than that
of WAXQ.

While I'm glad to see Pete and Dave back I'm a bit
aprehensive about the term classic rock. I really hope it
doesn't mean a very rigid playlist of a couple of hundred
songs that have been played to death and nothing new.

Long time NYC talk radio personality Barry Gray passed away
at the ageo of 80. He was on WMCA for 39 years and for the
last 7 years on WOR. Back in the WMCA Good Guy days his
show aired 11 PM until 1 AM while the rest of the station
played top 40.

Bruce,
My best guess is that one of the R&B/Churban/Dance stations
will modify their format significantly. WBLS, Kiss 98.7,
Hot 97 or WKTU are my guesses. I hope and pray that CBS FM
NEVER drops their format and that Joe Franklin and Danny
Styles keep up the tradition they have been known for.

Jon

BTW - I saw the preview for Howard Stern's Private Parts
which is to be released in the spring. Looks good.

Jon - There is a difference between a format modification
and change. If WKTU's ratings begin to drop, it would mean
they are burning out their listeners. They would have to
broaden their playlist.

Don't worry, WCBS-FM will NEVER change formats. I wish they
would loosen up somewhat and play more rarities and less
burnouts.

Jon - Over the last year or so WCBS-FM has been gravitated
slowly away from the 50s and toward the 80s. If they
empahszied the 50's music they listeners will age and leave
the highly desired 25-54 demographic. Most of the 80s stuff
they play are from artists who started in the 60s and 70s.
They also play some AC hits of the 80s.

Bruce,
I have no problem with the 80s sprinkled in the playlist at
CBS FM as long as it is not the dominant. It just sounded a
bit odd to hear 80s on an Oldies format. Typically, the
most recent music you hear on an Oldies station is 70s.
WBIG in DC emphasizes 60s with a bit of 50s and 70s. WINX
AM 1600 and 94.3 FM has 50s +. Then there is WWDC AM 1260
which is the WQEW equivalent except that it is automated
full time except the morning where they feature the dean of
Washington radio, Eddie Gallaher, who is about 81 years
young.

Why not... the stuff from the 80's is at least 6 years old.
That certainly qualified it for oldies status. Remember
when CBS-FM went oldies back in 72 nothing they planed was
more than 18 years old. To be equivalent today, they should
only be playing music from 1979 on.

WNEW-FM sure sounds much better since they reverted back to
classic rock. Their music mix is much better than that of
Q-104.3

I agree with you Bruce. When I first heard about the
Classic Rock format I thought how stale and boring however
they seem to be doing a nice job with it. Not only do they
appear to be going pretty deep into their record library but
their even mixing in some new things like REM's New
Adventures in Hi Fi or the Kink's To the Bone. It's great
to hear Pete back. Guess we'll see what happens to their
ratings.

WCBS-FM has a new contest. At 7:15 AM Harry Harrison will
announce the oldie of the day. When it is played later in
the day, you must call in as the 25th caller to win $1,000.
This contest will last for 25 years to help celebrate 25
years as New York's oldies station. Maybe our old friend
Vic will play along. :)

Once upon a time, WCBS-FM actually mixed in some currents.
They used to carry Dick Clark's National Music Survey, a
syndicated countdown of the top 30 hits, and Wednesday
nights, Cousin Brucie used to do a then and now countown,
plauying currents and oldies.

Ray - If I remember correctly WCBS-FM stopped playing
current hits in the mid 1980s. WCBS-FM once played Dick
Clark's Rock Roll and Remember on Sunday Mornings. If I
remember correctly the National Music Survey was on WYNY.

WCBS-FM will have a web site. Keep checking the following
URL:

http://www.wcbsfm.com

At the present time it is just the 25th anniversary logo
with an under construction sign.

Yes... CBS-FM used to play a very limited rotation of
currents... maybe 1 or 2 an hour and they called it "future
gold."

Long Island Newsday reports that B-103 (WBZO _ Bayshore) has
been sold to Barnstable Broadcasting. This oldies station
has done well in the Long Island ratings considering that
they have to compete with WCBS-FM. the article didn't say
anything about a format change. Barnsatable owns several
radio stations in the Long Island market.

There is an article in the City Section of the New York
Times (Sunday Jan. 12) about the financial situation of WNYC
radio.

Bruce, I would have to agree that since NEW-FM has gone
back to its original format, it has a much better sound than
104.3. The problem with "Classic Q" is the order they play
their selections. They play too many "wimpy"classic songs
back-to-back. The only thing wrong now with WNEW-FM is will
they remain playing that format for more than 6 months.
They are certainly the most confused station on the dial.

This is NYC radio news but not music radio news, Steve
Zipay of Newsday reports that WFAN is not in the running for
the New York Yankee contract. It seems that it would go
back to WABC or to WOR.

I believe FAN isn't going after the YANKEES since their deal
with the METS has a few more years to run and unlike the
GIANTS deal, the YANKS wouldn't cut a deal with one station
who'd then immediately farm out the broadcasts elsewhere.

Besides FAN had the YANKS all thru last October's
post-season, with mega ratings results.

Hi Mike.

The FAN blew all of us in the Connecticut burbs away in the
just released books with the Yankee stuff, even as far away
as New Haven.

I hope whoever get the Yankee rights this time around is
smart enough to write in the new contract that CBS can't
clear playoff and world series games in New York.

It seems that the Buzz still doesn't have DJs in most of

Newsday and the Post report that the Yankee rights have been
sold to the MSG network for $45 Million over 10 years.
Since MSG does not own a radio station they will have to buy
air time, probably on WABC according to the articles. If
there is an AM station for sale in the forseeable future,
look for MSG to get into the radio business.

Hasn't Mayor Rudy talked about unloading WNYC to help
balance the budget?

If so, this would be a great fit for MSG, particularly
since, at 820khz, WNYC is squarely in the middle of the NYC
AM cume zone that runs from 660AM to 1010AM.

I wonder whether MSG will step up as a major contributor to
Rudy's reelection campaign.

I believe WNYC AM\FM has already been sold to a nonprofit
foundation.

WNYC-TV, which like WNYC AM\FM was owned by the city and
broadcasts on a commercially designated frequency, was sold
to MSG's owners last year. It is now WBIS+ 31, which
(surprise!) is launching its new format with the
Knicks\Bulls game tomorrow.

I think that Bloomberg should get out of the radio business.
2 all news station in NYC are enough. Then MSG should buy
1130 AM.

How's WNYC-AM's signal? When they were at 830 it was pretty
crummy... certainly not enough to put the Yankees games on.
I know they operate at night now, but can you hear 'em?

Bloomberg's 1130 might make sense but Bloomberg seems to
march to a different drummer and is unlikely to sell. I'd
guess they'll buy bulk time on WABC or WOR... maybe even
WEVD.

Bloomberg may see itself as the only radio news alternative
to CBS (who now owns about half the radio stations in town).
If MSG buys a station, WEVD (which airs a lot of Knicks and
Rangers games) would probably be the first choice, unless
someone can convince the FCC to force CBS to cough up WFAN
or WINS.

WNYC has a 10,000 watt signal during the day, but drops to
1000 watts at night to protect WBAP from Fort Worth. I
doubt very much if the Yankees would go there.

From this week's Broadcasting:

"The citizen's WNYC Foundation has assumed control ofpublic
radio WNYC AM-FM from the City of New York, after urging
city officials not to turn over the stations' licenses to
commercial operators. The not-for-profit group presented the
city with a check for $3.3 million last week, the first of
six annual payments toward the $20 million the city is
fetching the foundation."

WEVD has a terrible suburban nighttime signal. How about
MSG buying WEVD and swapping frequencies with Bloomberg?
On the other hand, I would guess that most of Bloomberg
listeners live in the upscale suburbs, so a frequency swap
might not make sense for him.

WNYC AM\FM was bought by some nonprofit foundation, which
would make it impossible for WNYC-AM to receive commercial
sports of any type.

WNEW is finally listenable. This is the first time I'm
enjoying the station since Allison Steele was there. They
are sounding very much like the old K-rock. With Mel
Karmizan at the helm I am not surprised. I expect that he
will work the station into a sucess and not do any major
tampering with the format. 104.3 sounds like WPLJ before
they went top40- heavily preprogrammed by managment without
much room for the dj's input. Real classic rock is on NEW.
Classic Q is like an Arrow station.
PS=I can't believe Howard Stern really likes all the stuff
Krock is now playing.

NYC needed a fulltime alternative station. Infinity saw an
opportunity. Besides, K-Rock going alternative helped
inspire Evergreen to come up with WKTU, and forced Z100 to
go back to the top 40\hits format they should have never
dumped back in 1994.
Howard Stern listeners are much more likely to listen to
modern rock\alternative than classic rock. But personally, I
don't see how NYC can support 2 classic rock stations. It
couldn't support 2 current rock stations.

Something must happen soon with Yankee baseball. Spring

Why should we not have dumped Top 40 back in '94? We were in
13th place. During our modern rock era we had the first
upward surge in ratings the station had seen in years. If
Top 40 is so viable in NYC, why has Z-100 trended DOWN?

I have been a fan of WNEW and have appreciated their
appreciation for rock music for most of the past 20 years.
Their change back to a total "classic" format really leaves
a vacuum in NY-NJ for a station that plays not only the old,
but also the new "ptogressive" or "alternative" rock -
K-rock is a little too much, and its not worth having Howard
Stern's station on one of my car's pre-set buttons.What
would have happened in the 60's and 70's if they played
nothing but 40's and 50's music? The only really good
station I hear playing a mix of old and new with some
intelligence is 105.5FM that is out of western Jersey. Its
signal carries great in central, southern and parts of north
Jersey, but the signal gets week in parts of Bergen County.
I respect all of the DJ's on WNEW, but I sure wish they
would keep us in tune with some of the "good new" music that
is coming up (and I don't mean top 40, dance music, r&b). I
love Led Zeppelin, but I want to hear what's new - isn't
there a market of people who feel the same way ? ? ? ? ? ?

                                        Thanx

Sad huh? The way I think you should look at it is that
comercial radio, as well as tv, is programmed to the lowest
common denominator. My eclectic musical tastes are more
sophisticated that the average radio listener.
I also grew up listening to WNEW and while I love listening
to classic rock there's just so long I can listen to it. I
would love to see them mix up their classic rock with some
newer things. Who knows if their ratings shoot up maybe
management will let their all star DJ's loose to play what
they like. If you want to listen to real intelligent radio
give David Dye's World Cafe a try. It's syndicated on WFUV
weekday evenings from 9-11. Sunday nights of course there's
always Vin's Idiots Delight on WNEW.

Lewis - Since you are on AOL keyword ABC radio, then click
on local stations and then to WABC. Phil Boyce the program

The Arbitrends I saw (before R&R Online made them
subscriber-only) showed Z100 up.
BTW, if you're such a fan of alternative and a CHR hater,
why are you working for Z104 Washington? That station (which
filled a gaping musical hole in DC) is in the top 10 after
only 5 months while HFS is down. (Z104 has a much weaker
signal than WHFS, which is why they simulcast on 103.9FM in
Frederick.) Z104 also shows in the Baltimore ratings even
though 85% of that market can't pick up its signal.
Is your enmity towards Z100 caused by something other than
its current or former music format?

There is a Country Music Festival on New York City (not the
suburbs) Radio. It is on WKCR 89.9 FM, the radio station of
Columbia University. I don't know if it is just for today

I have no "emnity" towards Z-100 whatsoever. If I did it
would have nothing to do with my opinion of their current
direction, outside the fact that I'm not fond of seeing
something I worked long and hard to contribute to flushed

by the tone of your reply, doesn't surprise me.
Yes indeed, I'm currently employed by a successful major
market CHR. One of a HANDFUL. Instead of being so quick to
point out what you see as a contradiction on my part, why
not take a minute to examine your own logic in thinking so.
Z-100 went up 2 tenths of a point in the latest trend.
WHOA!!!!! BREAK OUT THE CHAMPAIGN!!!! (next page)
Go back and print out my analysis of CHR and particularly
CHR in New York. Keep it under your pillow for a year, and
then let's continue this discussion.

BTW, our signal, marginal as it may be, is TONS better than
HFS's. Our tower is much close to town then theirs.

I just went back and reviewed my note, which I should have
done before replying to you. I assumed it was a different
note that i apparently posted in another subject, and maybe
on another online service that you were replying to. Rather
than get into the whole thing again, I'll just leave it like
this. The renaissance that you're sure is at hand at Z-100,
and chr in general is an illusion. We'll talk some more when
everyone is satisfied that Z-100's latest attempt at CHR is
a failure. It would seem that it's gonna take a couple more
books for you to accept the truth.

I think that there is no longer any mass appeal music as
there was back in the 50s and 60s. There are so many genres
of music each appealing to a different demographic. For
this readon, it will be difficult for a pure CHR to do well
in any market. I am not in the radio or music business.
Just my opinion.

I found that when I was listening to "Top 40" years ago, I
didn't like--really didn't like--a lot of what was on. I
remember listening to Casey Kasem's countdown and scratching
my head almost weekly over the #1 song. So maybe it's
better this way. I'm into country, the ultimate Balkanized
music genre. All I need is one station.

My contention is that CHR shouldn't have been abandoned in
NYC. Anyone who listens to the Z now knows they are making
blatant appeals to attract back their pre-alternative days.
But you have access to Arbitrends us civilians can no longer
download. BTW, I have a friend who used to live in
Baltimore. He couldn't pick up Z104 there, but he had no
problem picking up WHFS. Traveling through that area, I've
picked up WHFS from Fredericksburg to Perryville, while I
couldn't pick up Z104 north of Arbutus or south of
Fredericksburg. Of course those signal observations were
made in a rented Ford Festiva back in September, so the
signals may have strengthened or weakened since.

Yes... the MSG folks will buy time on WABC to air the
Yankees... But while this was the first weekend of
grapefruit league action, no Yankee games were broadcast on
radio...
However John Sterling was scheduled to make his debut as a
WFAN talk show host. Does that mean he's out asthe Yankee
radio play by play man.

Jo Jo,

Top40 should be a concensus format... a blend of popular
hits of various genres...Frankly it has to sound like the
station is skimming the best and hottest of the
subcategories that make up contemporary pop music,
remembering the listener's basic conservatism: ie- play them
sounds they're familiar with or are most likely to want to
be familiarized with.

That was the secret of good CHR as Z100 was during the 80s

The reason Z-104 can't be heard in the majority of Baltimore
is due to a little phenomenon called "1st adjacent
shortspacing". There's a 104.3 in Baltimore. As for HFS, yes
indeed, their tower is closer to Baltimore than ours. I
coulda sworn we were talking about D.C?

Isn't that what Z-100 is doing now? Playing the best of all
genres? The simple fact is New York is a VERY fragmented
market. Not only is it fragmented, but the lion's share of
the genre specific stations are doing an excellent job of
superserving their audience. The CHR exclusive core is too
small to support them alone. The winning equation for CHR
has always been the sum total of that small core, and
holding the position of second favorite to every other
station specializing in one particular genre. Look at
Z-100's cume. As little as a year ago it was over 2 million.
Now it's about half. That means that during the course of a
week, only half as many people listen to them (next page)
for a minimum of 15 minutes. You only have to listen for one
quarter hour during a 7 day period to count as part of a
stations cume. That means 1 million people who listened to
Z-100 a year ago don't even give them 15 minutes a week.

At the monent, CHR and thus Z-100, is irrelevant in New
York. Back in '93 we found our way out of the hole by
exposing long ignored current rock product. We found the
next big thing. Z-100 will continue to suffer until they
find the next big thing, or take advantage of the only
sizeable hole in the market. The one they abandoned. They
ran from a perceived fight with K-Rock when in fact >>>
K-Rock scooped up all of Q104.3's disenfrancised listeners.
The 2 share that Q had before their flip to classic rock,
plus Howard's audience equals the 3.8 that K-Rock has now.
Where did Z-100's 4 share go? Some of it is listening to
K-Rock, some is still listening to Z-100 and some is
listening to The Buzz. Z-100 invited K-Rock to broaden their
approach, and opened up the hole that The Buzz is trying to
fill now. The problem is, this is still disenfrancised Z-100
cume. If Z reversed itself today they probably wouldn't be
in much better shape in the short run with all the new
competition they created for themselves, but would win back
what they abandoned eventually, forcing K-Rock >>>>
to tighten up and go harder to protect their core, and by
taking enough away from The Buzz to make what they're doing
not viable. Either ssomebody in that town is gonna have to
screw up enough to blow off enough cume for Z-100 to capture
as a mainstream CHR, or Z-100 is gonna have to find a niche.

Overall, they're not a bad sounding radio station. There are
a few markets where what they're doing would be hugely
successful, but New York isn't one of them.

I find it interesting that your response doesn't include the
impact of KTU... which even if its music mix incorporates
huge chunks of Urban, AC and Oldies elements, is still
perceived as a CHR station, "the hit station", "the fun
station", "the station with its pulse on the market" (the
way Z-100 was perceived a dozen or so years back)

Considering that Z-100 was vitually modern rock when KTU
debuted, their impact was not relevant to Z-100's previous
stance. Notice that the closer Z-100 gets to KTU musically,
the more they slip.

Yes, I was at KTU for the kickoff. Z-104 is something
totally different from KTU. While leaning a bit rythmic,
we're not a dance station. Would a KTU type station work in
D.C? Not likely as unlike in New York at the time KTU
debuted, alot of their playlist is already covered by a few
stations in this market. If that was the hole here we most
certainly would have covered it. CHR is working in D.C.
mainly because the specialists in this town aren't doing a
good job of serving their audience. While we have our loyal
core, most of our cume is from dissatisfied listeners of
other formats.

#89,
I figured Z104 would attract a lot of disenfranchised
listeners. At the time they debuted, songs like "Macarena",
"Missing", "Be My Lover", and other pop songs (mostly of the
dance variety although Z104 isn't a pure dance station like
WKTU) were completely ignored by the major stations in
Washington such as WPGC, WHFS, and Mix 107.
BTW, can you post some of those New York Arbitrends? Z100
didn't start playing WKTU-style dance until October, so the
ratings that reflect the shift in format would start in Fall
1996 and cover no more than 5 months.

Z-100 started gradually mainstreaming alot sooner than 5
months ago. At first, they eliminated all non-modern rock
titles from the station, which stopped the bleeding. They
were in the low-mid 3's and probably wouldn't have gone any
lower, and in time could have rebounded, especially when
Q104.3 bowed out of the game. Then suddenly they
about-faced, running from a perceived battle with K-Rock and
buying into the industry hype that "chr was back" and
"modern rock was over" What a shame that so many stations
have to parrot everything Z-100 does. It's become a
self-fulfilling prophecy for too many knee jerk
programmers.Hasn't anybody figured out yet that >>>>
rock-n-roll is here to stay and will never be out of
fashion? Artists fall out of fashion, not the music. Modern
rock suffers from the same thing that got chr into trouble.
Programmers falling in love with their supposed "core
artists" and refusing to play anything but them or
soundalikes. What made modern rock hot a few years back was
the mainstreaming of artists that were previously only known
to that elite few. I think it's great to play a new Smashing
Pumpkins, but what about their unknown equivalent that
should be breaking out now? The cycles of new and different
being replaced by comfortable and familiar (and stale) is
not a natural cycle of the music, but that of >>>>
rather that of programmers hell bent on repeating their
mistakes. Anybody ever notice that ratings go up in the
"new, exciting and unfamiliar" phase and level off and
eventually spiral down in the "comfortable and familiar"
phase? For the most part, the product which can be deemed as
modern rock is still very much there and plentiful.
Unfortunately, as rock radio enters its stale phase, the
labels will be giving radio exactly what it asks for. More
of the same.
